Discovering God's Will: Navigating Life with Divine Guidance

Ever find yourself wondering, "Where am I going in life?" or "What does God want for me?" These questions often linger in our hearts, especially when life feels uncertain. In our recent sermon, we explored how to align our lives with God's will and His way, using the metaphor of a GPS—God's Powerful Spirit—to guide us.

The Prodigal Son's Wake-Up Call

Imagine being in a place you never thought you'd end up, much like the prodigal son in the Bible. He demanded his inheritance, left home, and squandered it all on reckless living. Eventually, he found himself in a pigpen, longing for the food the pigs ate. It was in this lowly state that he "came to himself," realizing he didn't have to live that way. This moment of clarity was the Holy Spirit nudging him back to his father's house, back to a life aligned with his true identity as a beloved son.

This story reminds us that recognizing where we are is the first step in aligning with God's will. Have you ever paused to ask, "Where am I right now?" It's a question that invites honesty and reflection, opening the door for the Holy Spirit to guide us back on track.

Seeking God's Will and Way

Once we know where we are, the next question is, "Where does God want me to go?" and "How do I get there?" Jesus taught us to pray, "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). This prayer is a powerful reminder that God's will should be our sustenance, much like food. Jesus Himself said, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent me" (John 4:34).

But how do we discern God's will? The answer lies in seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). When we prioritize God's will, everything else falls into place. It's about flipping our priorities, much like turning Maslow's hierarchy of needs upside down. Instead of focusing on basic needs first, we seek God's kingdom, trusting that He will provide for us.

Practical Steps for Spiritual Growth

So, how can we practically align with God's will and way? Here are a few steps:

  1. Ask the Right Questions: Regularly ask yourself, "Where am I?" and "Where does God want me to go?" Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in these reflections.

  2. Engage with Scripture: The Bible is our roadmap. Dive into God's Word to understand His will and way. Consider joining a Bible study or discipleship group to deepen your understanding.

  3. Embrace Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can support and guide you. The church is a vital part of discerning God's will, offering wisdom and encouragement.

  4. Participate in a Fast: Consider joining a 21-day fast to focus on spiritual growth. Use this time to seek God's direction and align your life with His purposes.

A Prayer for Guidance

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our guide and our source of strength. Help us to recognize where we are and where You want us to go. May Your Holy Spirit lead us in Your will and Your way. As we seek Your kingdom first, provide for our needs and shape us into the people You created us to be. Amen.

By aligning our lives with God's will and way, we open ourselves to the abundant life He promises. Let's embark on this journey together, trusting in His guidance and provision.
