Ever Wonder Who God Came For?
As the holiday season envelops us in its warm embrace, we often find ourselves reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas. Amidst the hustle and bustle, have you ever paused to consider who Jesus came for? The answer might surprise you. This season, let's explore the profound message of "God with us" and discover how it extends to every corner of humanity.
God's Unexpected Arrival
Imagine the scene: a humble stable, a young couple, and the birth of a child who would change the world. Jesus's arrival was anything but grandiose. Born in a manger, He entered the world in the most modest of circumstances. This was no accident. God chose this path to show us that He is with the less fortunate, the regular working folk, and even the foreigners among us.
In the Gospel of Luke, we read about shepherds—ordinary people working the night shift—being the first to hear the good news of Jesus's birth. They weren't kings or leaders, but God chose them to witness the Savior's arrival. This choice speaks volumes about the kind of God we serve—a God who prioritizes the overlooked and the humble.
Who Is "Us"?
The sermon reminds us that "us" is more inclusive than we might think. Jesus came for the lost, the rich, the poor, and everyone in between. Consider Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector who climbed a tree just to catch a glimpse of Jesus. Despite his wealth and status, Zacchaeus was lost and seeking. Jesus's response? An invitation to dine with him, offering salvation and transformation.
Contrast this with the rich young ruler who, despite his adherence to the commandments, couldn't part with his wealth to follow Jesus. The message is clear: God is with us, but are we with Him? Our willingness to choose God over worldly possessions defines our relationship with Him.
Embracing the Call
So, how do we respond to this divine invitation? It starts with recognizing that God came for all of us—regardless of our background, status, or past mistakes. The Apostle Paul, once a persecutor of Christians, experienced a radical transformation when Jesus met him on the road to Damascus. If God can choose Paul, He can choose us too.
Practical Steps to Embrace God's Presence
Reflect on Your "Us": Consider who you might be excluding from your understanding of "us." How can you extend God's love to those who are different from you?
Seek God in Solitude: Take time to pause and listen for God's voice. Whether through prayer, meditation, or reading Scripture, create space for divine encounters.
Choose God Daily: Evaluate what might be holding you back from fully embracing God's call. Is it wealth, status, or fear? Surrender these to God and choose Him above all else.
A Prayer for the Journey
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to be with us. Help us to recognize Your presence in our lives and to extend Your love to everyone we encounter. May we choose You daily, surrendering our fears and desires to Your will. Guide us as we seek to live out the true meaning of Christmas, embracing the "us" that includes all of humanity. In Jesus's name, we pray. Amen.
This Christmas, let's remember that God is with us—all of us. As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, may we open our hearts to His presence and extend His love to the world around us.
