Ever caught yourself making a decision that seemed perfect on paper, only to watch it unravel in ways you never imagined? You're not alone. We've all been there—calculating the benefits, minimizing the costs, and convincing ourselves we've got it all figured out. But what if our math is fundamentally flawed?
The Hidden Cost of Going It Alone
Think about the last major decision you made. Maybe it was a career move, a relationship, or a financial investment. You probably weighed the pros and cons, ran the numbers, and felt confident in your choice. But here's the problem: we're terrible at predicting consequences.
The Bible shows us this pattern from the very beginning. In Genesis 3, Eve saw the forbidden fruit and did her own calculation. It looked good, tasted appealing, and promised wisdom. The perceived benefit seemed worth the expected cost. But what she couldn't see were the hidden consequences—shame, broken relationships, fear, conflict, and ultimately death entering the world.
We make the same mistake today. We choose the highest-paying job without considering the toll on our family. We pursue relationships that feel right without asking if they align with God's design. We make financial decisions based on late-night TikTok videos about "passive income" without understanding the real costs involved.
God's Formula for Abundant Life
Here's the good news: God offers us a better way. Jesus said in John 10:10, "I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance." Not just getting by. Not just surviving. Abundant life.
But abundant life doesn't come from doing whatever feels right in the moment. It comes from answering two critical questions: Whose will? and Whose way?
God's will, done God's way, is the divine design for flourishing. It's like following a recipe exactly as written—when you use the right ingredients in the right proportions, you get the intended result every time. But when we substitute our preferences or skip steps we don't understand, we shouldn't be surprised when things fall apart.
Matthew 6:33 gives us the roadmap: "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." When we prioritize God's will and align our lives with His way, He promises to provide everything we need.
The Real Math Problem
The world's formula looks like this: Perceived Benefit - Expected Cost = Worth It.
But this equation is missing something crucial: the hidden costs we can't see or predict. Only God knows the full picture. He sees the consequences of our choices before we make them. That's why His direction isn't restrictive—it's protective and providing.
Romans 6:23 contrasts the two paths perfectly: "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." One path leads to consequences we didn't calculate. The other leads to abundant life now and eternal life later.
Your Next Step
Today, you have a choice. You can continue trusting your own calculations, or you can surrender to the One who sees the whole picture. God isn't trying to limit your joy—He's trying to maximize your flourishing.
What decision are you facing right now? Before you move forward, ask yourself: Am I seeking God's will or my own? Am I committed to doing it His way, or am I adding my own "improvements" to His recipe?
Ready to experience abundant life? Start by confessing Jesus as Lord and committing to follow His direction. It's the best decision you'll ever make.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us enough to give us direction. Forgive us for the times we've trusted our own calculations over Your wisdom. Help us to seek Your will and follow Your way in every decision we face. Give us the courage to surrender our plans and embrace Your perfect design for our lives. We trust that You see what we cannot and that Your path leads to true abundant life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
