Choose Alignment Over Ambition: Living God's Will, God's Way in Every Decision

Ever stood at a crossroads, wondering which path to take? Maybe it's a job offer, a relationship decision, or a major life change. We've all been there—caught between what we want and what God might be calling us to do.

Here's a framework that could change everything: Whose will? Whose way?

The Two Questions That Set Your Life's Trajectory

Think of these questions as a pair of glasses through which you view every decision. One lens asks, "Whose will am I following?" The other asks, "Whose way am I using to get there?" It sounds simple, but the implications are profound.

Consider Abraham's story. God told him clearly: "Leave your country, your people, and your father's household." Pretty straightforward, right? Yet Abraham brought his nephew Lot along—a decision that seemed culturally appropriate but wasn't what God asked. The result? Years of conflict, family drama, and unnecessary battles. Abraham wanted God's destination but insisted on his own directions.

This is what happens when we pursue God's will, our way. We agree with the destination but insist on our own GPS. We want God's dish but add our own ingredients—like throwing raisins and carrots into potato salad when nobody asked for that.

The Three Temptations That Pull Us Off Course

Scripture identifies three root causes that misalign us from God's path: craving (excessive desire for sensual pleasures), coveting (wanting what others have), and self-confidence (trusting our own wisdom over God's).

Even Jesus faced these exact temptations in the wilderness. Satan offered Him bread when He was hungry (craving), all the kingdoms of the world (coveting), and a chance to prove His divine identity by jumping off the temple (self-confidence). Jesus countered each one with Scripture, showing us the power of God's Word to keep us aligned.

The question isn't whether you'll be tempted—you will. The question is how you'll respond.

Fear of the Lord: Your Secret Weapon

Here's something beautiful: Psalm 25 promises that God shares His "secret counsel" with those who fear Him. Not terror, but reverence—a healthy respect that says, "God, I'll obey You before I even know the details."

When you position yourself this way, God doesn't just show you the path. He sits down with you and confides His plans. He reveals His covenant. Imagine having that kind of access to divine wisdom when you're wrestling with a tough decision or facing an impossible situation.

Abraham eventually got there. When God asked him to circumcise 318 men (ouch), he jumped up and did it. When God asked him to sacrifice Isaac, the Bible says he rose "early the next morning." No hesitation. No negotiation. Just obedience. That's God's will, God's way.

Your Next Step Toward Alignment

Where do you find yourself today? Maybe you're fully in "my will, my way" territory—doing your own thing entirely. Or perhaps you're like early Abraham, agreeing with God's destination but insisting on your own route.

The good news? You can change course right now. You can decide today to live aligned with God's will and God's way. It starts with three tools: the Holy Spirit to guide you, the Word of God to direct you, and the fear of the Lord to position you for His secret counsel.

Take action this week: Identify one decision you're facing and ask yourself honestly, "Whose will? Whose way?" Then commit to seeking God's answer through prayer, Scripture, and godly counsel before moving forward.

Prayer: Father, I want to live aligned with Your will and Your way. Forgive me for the times I've insisted on my own path. Give me a heart that fears You—not in terror, but in reverence. Share Your secret counsel with me. Help me resist craving, coveting, and self-confidence, and instead trust fully in Your wisdom. Lead me by Your Spirit and Your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
